Purpose

To build and support relationships that will broaden participation in the atmospheric and related sciences. These relationships will
  • Encourage excellence within UCAR, NCAR, and UOP by nurturing a diverse workforce
  • Support the UCAR university community’s efforts to broaden participation
  • Improve UCAR’s ability to serve a diverse and global society

We particularly seek to expand the UCAR community to include more institutions that serve students from groups that are under-represented in the sciences: historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and two-year colleges.

Guiding Principles

Listen
Community building program activities will be defined through conversations with institutions that serve diverse communities, and focus on enabling long-term strategies led by those institutions.

Work Collaboratively
The model isn’t one of competing for relatively few candidates; or even to grow the geosciences at the expense of other fields. Instead, we will increase opportunities to participate in geosciences, so that society benefits from an expanded workforce.

Broaden participation by broadening service
Efforts to encourage the participation in the atmospheric and related sciences will go hand-in-hand with opportunities to serve diverse and currently underserved communities.

Leverage UCAR resources to develop capacity
UCAR’s unique expertise is in supporting the research community; CPB will leverage that expertise to offer more diverse communities the opportunity to execute their own research agenda.

Build on existing efforts
Focus on leveraging existing activities and coordinating pre-existing networks, both within UCAR, NCAR, and UOP and externally.
